Madhuri Dixit


Named among the top five most powerful Indian film stars by Forbes in 2001, Madhuri Dixit is a renowned bollywood actress and an accomplished dancer. One of the leading Indian actresses, Madhuri was born on 15th May, 1967 to Shankar and Snehlata Dixit in Mumbai.

Madhuri Dixit aspired to become a microbiologist and attended the Divine Child High School and Bombay's Parle College, Mumbai University. A trained Kathak dancer, Madhuri won over million hearts with her spellbinding dance performances. Madhuri Dixit married Dr. Sriram Madhav Nene in 1999 and has two sons, Arin and Raayan. Her husband Dr. Nene is a Cardiovascular Surgeon and they are currently settled in Denver, Colorado, US.

Prior to joining the film industry, Madhuri Dixit was a well known model. Madhuri Dixit was launched by the notable filmmaker Subhash Ghai in ‘Dayavan’ opposite Vinod Khanna. However her first release was ‘Abodh’, she next appeared in a couple of movies in supporting roles. Madhuri Dixit rocked the box office with her first commercial success ‘Tezzab’ opposite Anil Kapoor in 1988. The movie became a smash hit and Madhuri received her first Filmfare best actress nomination. Madhuri’s performance in the dance number ‘Ek Do Teen’ is still considered a classic.

Madhuri Dixit worked in a number of blockbuster hits in late 80s, including ‘Ram Lakhan’, ‘Parinda’ and ‘Kishen Kanhaiya’ opposite Anil Kapoor and ‘Tridev’ opposite Sunny Deol. Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s ‘Parinda’ became India’s official entry to Oscars in 1989. Madhuri Dixit received her first Filmfare Best Actress Award for Indra Kumar’s ‘Dil’. Starring opposite Aamir Khan, 1990 release romantic drama ‘Dil’ became the biggest hit at the box office that year.

Early 90s proved to be a magnificent period in Madhuri’s career with super hits like ’Saajan’ opposite Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan, ‘Beta’ opposite Anil Kapoor, ‘Khalnayak’ opposite Jackie Shroff and Sanjay Dutt, ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’ opposite Salman Khan and ‘Raja’ opposite Sanjay Kapoor. Madhuri Dixit’s splendid performance in ‘Beta’ garnered her second Filmfare best Actress Award.

Sooraj Barjatya’s family drama ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’ became a huge commercial success in India as well as overseas; the movie is among the top grossing films on Indian cinema of all times. Released in 1994, ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’ earned Madhuri her third Filmfare Best Actress Award. In the same year, her performance in thriller ’Anjaam’ received critical accolades.

Bollywood Diva Madhuri Dixit

In 1997, Madhuri Dixit appeared in Yash Chopra’s romantic musical film ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’ alongside Shahrukh Khan and Karishma Kapoor. The film became a mega success, both critically as well as commercially. Madhuri earned her fourth Filmfare best Actress Award for her performance in ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’. Madhuri was next seen in Prakash Jha’s critically acclaimed ‘Mrityudand’. ‘Mrityudand’ blended together the elements of mainstream and parallel cinema and was honored at many international film festivals including the Cinéma Tout Ecran , Geneva and the Bangkok Film Festival.

Madhuri Dixit was awarded with the Filmfare Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Devdas’. The classic film was featured at the Cannes Film Festival and won numerous awards. ‘Devdas’ starred Shahrukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai in lead, however Madhuri’s incomparable charisma won her applauds from critics and audiences. Inspired by Madhuri Dixit’s pristine beauty, the distinguished painter M.F. Hussain made a film ‘Gaja Gamini’ dedicated to Madhuri. He has also dedicated many of his paintings to her. Madhuri Dixit was last seen in Yash Chopra’s ‘Aaja Nach Le’ released in 2007, though the movie failed at the box office, Madhuri received rave reviews.

Till date Madhuri has won five Filmfare, four Star Screen and an IIFA award along with ten nominations at the prestigious Filmfare Awards. Madhuri Dixit was honored by the Govt. of India with the Padma Shri Award in 2008. Recently she was named in the list of the "33 women who made India proud" by The Economic Times.
