Known for her exemplary performances and baritone voice, Rani Mukherjee is one of the leading Indian actresses of modern times. Rani Mukherjee was born on 21st march, 1978 and belongs to a cinema oriented family. Her father Ram Mukherjee is a retired director and mother Krishna Mukherjee is a playback singer of yesteryears. Her father is also one of the founders of the well known Filmalaya Studios. Her aunts Debashree Roy and Tanuja are award winning actresses, while cousin Kajol is a popular Bollywood actress. Her brother Raja Mukherjee and cousin Ayan Mukherjee are film directors.
Rani Mukherjee attended the Maneckjee Cooper High School in Juhu, Mumbai and then went to Mithibai College in Mumbai. Rani Mukherjee is proficient in Odissi form of dance and fancies her mom’s Fish Curry.
Rani made her first screen appearance with her home production ‘Biyer Phool’ in a cameo role. ‘Biyer Phool ’ was a Bengali film directed by her father Ram Mukherjee. Her Bollywood debut came with 1997 release ‘Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat’ that failed to do well at the box office. However her performance was noticed and earned her a Special Jury appreciation at the Star Screen Awards.

Rani Mukherjee was accepted by the audiences and the industry with her award winning performance in Karan Johar’s ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ and was critically acclaimed for ‘Ghulam’ opposite Aamir Khan. Rani Mukherjee was next seen in a song sequence in Inder Kumar’s ‘Mann’ that instantly topped the music charts. Rani Mukherjee received her next nomination at the Filmfare for Aziz Mirza directed ‘Chalte Chalte’ opposite Shahrukh Khan. In the same year Rani was praised for her perfect comic timing in ‘Chori Chori’ also featuring Ajay Devgan and Sonali Bendre.
Rani’s reign began in 2004 with her three blockbuster releases including Mani Ratnam’s ‘Yuva’, Kunal Kohli’s romantic comedy ‘Hum Tum’ and Yash Chopra’s ‘Veer Zaara’. While ‘Yuva’ got her a Filmfare Ward for Best Supporting Actress, she won her first Filmfare Best Actress Award for ‘Hum Tum’. Though she did not play the lead in ‘Veer Zaara’, her performance won accolades and the movie became the highest grossing film of the year.
Rani continued to rule bollywood in 2005 with smash hits like Sanjay Leela Bhansali's ‘Black’, Shaad Ali's ‘Bunty Aur Babli’, Amol Palekar's ‘Paheli’.Her effortless acting in ‘Black’ won her several awards, while ‘Bunty Aur Babli’ became the highest earner of the year. Moreover ‘Paheli’ became India’s official entry to Oscars in 2005. Rani also appeared in Ketan Mehta's ‘Mangal Pnadey:The Rising’ opposite Aamir Khan.
In 2006, Rani appeared in Karan Johar’s ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’ that featured an ensemble cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Kirron Kher, Preity Zinta and Abhishek Bachchan. Rani won her third IIFA Best Actress Award for ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’. Rani mukherjee was next seen in a few flops like’Baabul’, ‘Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic’, ‘Ta Ra Rum Pum’ and ‘Saanwariya’.
Rani’s latest release was YRF’s ‘Dil Bole Hadippa’ opposite Shahid Kapoor. Set in the backdrops of Punjab, the movie fared pretty well at the box office. Rani’s working on a couple of much coveted projects including ‘No One Killed Jessica’ based on the true incident of Jessica Lal murder incident.
