Sharara

The one of the traditional dresses of Muslim women is sharara. The trend of it started in sub-continent during the reign of Mughals. Ghagra and lehnga choli are two different names of it. One thing must be kept in mind that lehangas and shararas are two different things. There is a big difference between these two. Long skirt with a widely opened flare at the bottom is called lehanga. Whereas, pants with wide legs just like bell-bottoms but a bit more wider are called shararas. These are fitted at the knee and a widely opened flare till the bottom. The bottom of the shararas just looks like the full skirt.

One of the major difference between shararas and lehangas has been describe above but there are some other differences too. According to the tradition, women usually wear lehanga with a blouse commonly called ‘choli’. Therefore lehangas are usually and most commonly referred as lehangacholi. Contrary to this, short kurtas are usually worn with shararas and these shirts are designed in such a way that these can easily cover the upper part of women’s body. Length of kurtas can be made according to the choice. And kurtas can be even longer to cover the knees also. And when we talk about the Indian women, they also wear shararas along with choli. Indian shararas are modified little bit according to Indian tradition. And both of these dresses, lehangas and shararas, are mostly worn along with a dupatta.

Like other dresses, shalwar kameez and sarees, sharara is not used as a regular dress. It is mostly reserved for parties and wedding ceremonies. It has become a symbol of wedding, that most of girls or women wear shararas on wedding ceremonies.

There are different types of sharara that are being popular these days. Wedding sharara is one of them. Most of Indian brides wear traditional sarees and lehangas on their wedding ceremonies. But it has also become an important bridal dress for the women. No doubt, the most traditional bridal dress is shalwar kameez. The bridal shararas are rich in hand works. Work of resham and zardozi are usually done to make wedding shararas more beautiful and elegant. These are mostly designed by a designer is called designer sharara. They have less embroidery work done on them. But these have more elegant look as compared to bridal shararas. Silk and satin which are commonly called royal fabrics, are used by designers. Zari work is done on these types of shararas. Most of women wear designer sharara on formal parties like birthday.

And finally the most important and common type of sharara is sharara shalwar kameez commonly called sharara suit. And this type is becoming popular among Indian women. The main difference between traditional shararas and suit is the size of flared bottom. To give a shalwar like look, the bottom of suit is reduced to some extent. But as compared to traditional shalwar, bottom of suit is bit wider. Similarly duppatas are usually worn along with these suits.

So all in all, it can be said sharara is a Muslim women dress that can be used to represent the traditions of Muslim women in an elegant way.
