Shashi Kapoor is a renowned Indian actor who has starred in several blockbuster Hindi films and a few British productions. Shashi Kapoor has acted in over hundred Hindi films and also produced a few movies; he is now retired and was las seen in 1998 Merchant Ivory film ‘Side Streets’ alongside acclaimed actress Shabana Azmi.
Shashi Kapoor was born as Balbir Raj Kapoor on 18 March 1938 in Calcutta to the legendary actor and filmmaker Prithviraj Kapoor. Shashi Kapoor is the brother of eminent film personalities Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor. The high profile Kapoor dynasty has actors like Rishi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, Rajeev Kapoor, Karishma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor.

Shashi kapoor attended the Don Bosco High School in Matunga, Bombay. He married the British actress Jennifer Kendal; they met for the first time in Calcuuta where where he was a part of the Prithvi Theatre troupe, while she was touring with the Shakespeareana theatre troupe to play the character of Miranda in the play `The Tempest'. The two have also acted in a few British films together including the Merchant Ivory productions like ‘Heat and Dust’.
Shashi Kapoor and Jennifer Kapoor have three children: sons Karan and Kunal and daughter Sanjana. All three of them have tried their luck in bollywood but could not be very successful owing to their unconventional looks. Karan Kapoor has successfully modeled for years and is now an established photographer. Kunal Kapoor ia an ace adfilmmaker and has directed a number of riveting TV commercials. Sanjana Kapoor now runs the Prithvi Theatre in Mumbai and is married to Valmik Thapar, a wildlife consevationist. After a long battle with cancer, Shashi Kapoor’s wife Jennifer Kapoor passed away in the year 1984.
Shashi kapoor started his acting career as a child artist in films like ‘Aag’, ‘Awaara’ and several other Mythological films. He made his adult debut in Yash Chopra’s ‘Dharamputra’ and later appeared in a number of blockbuster films. His onscreen chemistry with Amitabh Bachchan was stunning and the actor duo starred in superhit films like ‘Deewar’ alongside Neetu Singh and Parveen Babi, ‘Do Aur Do Paanch’ alongside Parveen Babi and Hema Malini, ‘Namak Halaal’ alongside Parveen Babi and Smita Patil, ‘Kabhi Kabhie’ alongside Rakhee and Waheeda Rehman, ‘Silsila’ alongside Jaya Bachchan and Rekha.
He also appered in other successful films like Yah Choprta’s ‘Waqt’, ‘Jab Jab Phool Khile’ opposite Rakhee’, ‘Roti Kapda Aur Makan’ opposite Zeenat Aman, ‘Chor Machaye Shor’opposite Mumtaz, ‘Fakira’ opposite Shabana Azmi, ‘Trishul’ alongside Sanjeev Kumar and amitabh Bachchan, ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’ opposite Zeenat Aman, ‘Kaala Patthar’ and ‘Suhaag’ opposite Parveen Babi, ‘Shaan’ alongside amitabh Bachchan, Parveen Babi and Bindiya Goswami and Manoj Kumar’s patriotic film ‘Kranti’.
He also starred in a number od British films made by Merchant Ivory productions including ‘Shakespeare Wallah’, ‘bombay Talkie’, ‘Heat and Dust’, ‘Pretty Polly’, ‘Siddhartha’, ‘Sammy and Rosie Get Laid’ and ‘Side Streets’among others.
Shashi kapoor received the National Film Awards for Best Actor for ‘New Delhi Times’ and National Film Award - Special Jury Award for ‘Muhafiz’. He was recently honored with the lifetime achievent award at the Filmfare Awards and the Pune International Film Festival.
